EVERGREEN COLORADO
Evergreen is a beautiful mountain community located within the Rocky Mountains, sitting at an elevation of 7,220 ft., 20 miles west of Denver, Colorado.
In 1875, the area was named "Evergreen" by Dwight Wilmot, likely due to the abundance of ponderosa pine, douglas fir and spruce trees which remain green year round. Previously the area had belonged by treaty to the Ute and Arapahoe Indians. Back then, Evergreen was part of a heavily timbered, vast wilderness area. The first settlers to the area were French fur traders and lumberjacks.
Through the 1920's and 30's, Evergreen remained primarily a resort community. During the 1940's, continuing road improvements allowed automobile travel to become more popular and the somewhat isolated town of Evergreen began to change. It quickly became possible for people to live in Evergreen, yet commute daily to work in Denver.
Today, Evergreen is home to a significant number of residents who commute to work outside their mountain home town.
